Pat took the letter, and Joanna immediately slumped. The moment he finished reading it, he had the sensation that someone had torn his heart apart. The previous time he had been shot, the pain was much less severe than this one. Their young son, Derek, had been taken from them in the line of duty. It was impossible for them to recover from this.
