Pat took the letter, and Joanna immediately slumped. The moment he finished reading it, he had the sensation that someone had torn his heart apart. The previous time he had been shot, the pain was much less severe than this one. Their young son, Derek, had been taken from them in the line of duty. It was impossible for them to recover from this. As Pat saw his wife continue to sink deeper into despair on a daily basis, he felt unable to provide sympathy or support to her.

After their son died, the married couple became increasingly estranged. Pat eventually realized he couldn’t assist his wife, and the couple divorced. He let Joanna maintain the house while he was on the run. Pat was virtually alone. He opted to relocate to New York, yet it was no less welcoming than his previous residence. He wandered around for another twenty years, picking up various jobs to make ends meet. He’d lost a lot of things along the way, but two things were always close to his heart: Derek’s old baseball cap and an old photo of him. He’d removed both from his room before finally leaving the house.
