This prompted a major operation. Hundreds of workmen were dispatched to the area in order to unearth the army of terracotta soldiers. They discovered the terracotta guys after working on the earth. These statues could be released from the earth for the first time in hundreds of years.

Not Just Soldiers
The monuments, however, were not confined to troops. There were also non-human figurines. Among other things, the specialists discovered hundreds of ceramic animals. For example, they discovered birds and horses in the dirt. Over 500 working horses were used to pull over 150 full-size chariots.
