In 1974, Chinese laborers digging a well uncovered thousands ancient terracotta clay war figures. The Terracotta Army, as it is now known, was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987. The Army was discovered near the mausoleum built for Qin Shi Huang, China’s first emperor. The figures are very realistic and are exact replicas of the king’s warriors. There are 8,000 terracotta soldiers in total, with just 2,000 of them excavated. The warriors were created to guard the emperor on his trip to the afterlife in 210 B.C.
