Fortunately, he was able to do this on account of money given to him from his life insurance policy. However, due to certain terms stated in the policy, the conditions made life anything but simple for David… as his parents John and Joan ensured chaos.

Not long after David had been diagnosed with a terminal illness; he called his life insurer to file a claim. David had been prepared for an unfortunate event like this ever since he had turned 18, and fortunately was covered. However, there were two routes he could go down when claiming the insurance. Option 1 involved claiming nothing until his inevitable demise, at which time his next of kin, John and Joan, would receive a large sum, around $1,000,513. However, the second option had several conditions. The life insurance company would pay David’s rent (up to a generous amount) until his death, giving him monthly allowances and expenditure to ensure that he could live out the last of his days in comfort. At the end of this, his next of kin would receive a small settlement of around $25,000. David was sure that option 2 was right for him, well, that was until he told John and Joan about his plans. That was when all HELL BROKE LOOSE…

“What do you mean David? Do you know how incredibly selfish that is?”, Joan exclaimed. He sat there in a state of confusion. “What do you mean Mom?”. She proceeded to angrily explain that if he was to do this, it would leave them penniless. After all they had done for him, raising him, feeding him, clothing him; she couldn’t believe he would leave them high and dry after he passes. David was in disbelief. How could his own parents be so horrid. He is about to pass away and all they care about is money? Well he wasn’t going to stand for it.

“I am going to use all the cash”, David told Joan. “Every last cent will be spent before I die”. “I will waste it on things I don’t need, I will give it away, I would rather BURN it then give you or John a single penny!”. Joan gawped in shock. John stood awkwardly next to her and began to look unwell. It can’t be easy hearing such things from your only child. “I don’t feel so well”, John told the pair as he fell to his knees, ultimately collapsing on the floor. “There’s something I need to tell you both”, he whispered from a fetal position on the rough carpet.

Before he could answer, David was ushered away by a pair of incoming paramedics. The whole thing happened so quickly. John was lifted up onto a gurney and speedily wheeled out to the ambulance outside. “We have to go to the hospital Mom, Dad was acting really strange, saying strange things”. “I’m sure it’s just delusional talk from the faint, but let’s follow the ambulance to the hospital’. David agreed. He was still livid that his own mother had threatened to disown him, but right now there were bigger things going on. He needed to know what his Dad was going to tell him.

“Do you think Dad will be ok?”, David asked Joan. “I hope so”, she replied. “Now that I have no son, he is the only family I have left. And just like that, he was reminded of the horrible argument that they had just had. He saw their point, he could ensure that they would never need to work again. But why should he have to subsidize the last months of his life? He could live the rest of his life comfortably, not in his parents spare bedroom. He did begin to wonder whether he was doing the right thing. Before he could think further, they arrived at the hospital. He wondered what his father was about to tell him before he was whisked away. It sounded concerning. He needed to know, now.
