Clapton is said to have attempted to court Boyd again after he had left drugs, with greater success this time around. In 1974, Boyd filed for divorce from Harrison, and she later married Clapton in 1979 after settling down with him. While doing so, Clapton began recording his first songs, which included 1974’s “I Shot the Sheriff,” which reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

The musician, on the other hand, continued to imbibe. He also claimed to have consumed two to three bottles of vodka every day in the late 1960s, which was said to have taken a toll on his marriage as time passed. A 1999 interview with the Sunday Times in the United Kingdom revealed that Clapton admitted to physically beating Boyd during their time together. “I know that when I was a full-blown, practicing alcoholic, everyone used to walk around on eggshells around me,” he remarked.
