Clapton’s mother, you see, left the United States when he was a toddler to live with another man in Canada.

As a result of this, Clapton grew up believing that his grandmother Rose was his mother. And when Pat showed up, as she did on occasion, he mistook her for an older sister, leading him to believe she was. Clapton, on the other hand, was clearly troubled by his father’s absence, as seen by his song “My Father’s Eyes” which he dedicated to Fryer in 1988.
